Transaction categorization

Assigning every bank and card transaction to an account in the chart of accounts, so the reports show where the money went.

In plain words

Also called coding. Every line that comes in from the bank or a card gets a category: fuel, rent, job materials, software. The categories come from your chart of accounts.

The same vendor usually gets the same category every month, which makes this the first job software takes. The hard ones are new vendors and charges that could be two things, and those go to a person.

51 of the 125 bookkeeper postings we read list data entry or categorizing by name.
