What the job you posted really costs.

Put in the salary from your posting. See the full cost of the seat for a year, what you pay for each hour of work that really needs a person, and what it costs you while it sits empty.

Median posted pay is from finance postings we read in full in September 2026 (bookkeeper 125 postings, staff accountant 21, AP, AR and payroll 17, controller 108). Median time to fill an accounting role is about 90 days.

An illustration from public averages, not a quote. Your real number comes from the task list in your own posting.

How the number is built

Two lines on top of the salary.

Each line is a share of the salary, rounded to the nearest $100. Both shares are the federal Bureau of Labor Statistics averages for private companies with 1 to 49 workers (Employer Costs for Employee Compensation, June 2025). The same rule runs on every page of this site.

10.66%

Payroll taxes

The costs the law requires: Social Security 6.2% and Medicare 1.45% (the employer's share), plus unemployment insurance and workers' comp.

23.04%

Benefits and insurance

Paid leave, bonuses, health, retirement and insurance. Change it above to your own.

What the calculator leaves out

The number is the floor, not the ceiling.

We kept it to costs every employer pays. These sit on top, and depend on your business.

  • State unemployment tax. Varies by state and your history. Federal unemployment is $42 a year per employee.
  • Payroll service fees. What your payroll provider charges per employee.
  • Raises. The salary you post this year is not the salary in year three.
  • Ramp-up. A new hire takes time to learn how your books run before they are at full speed.
  • Your own time. The hours you or your office manager spend covering while the seat is empty.
  • A refill. If the person leaves, you pay recruiting and the empty seat again.

Calculator questions

Is this a quote for what you would charge?

No. It is what the seat costs you if you hire it yourself. What we would cost is priced from your posting on a call: the role, the hours that still need a person, and which duties our agents take on day one. You get that number in writing before anything starts.

Why does the hour figure use 2,080 hours?

That is 40 hours a week for 52 weeks, the standard full-time year. Paid holidays and vacation are inside it, so the cost of an hour actually worked is a little higher.

What does "hours a week that need a person" change?

Only the blue box. A posting pays one rate for every hour, including the hours of routine work software can do. If 20 of 40 hours need a person, the loaded cost of the seat is spread over half as many hours of real work, so each of those hours costs twice as much. Sorting the duties is how you find your number: which tasks software can do today.

Where does the median pay come from?

From US finance postings we bought with their full text in September 2026 and read in full. Pay is the midpoint of each posting's stated band, with hourly bands at 2,080 hours. The method is in the finance hiring report.

Is anything I type sent anywhere?

No. The math runs in your browser. If you copy a link, the numbers you typed are in that link and nowhere else.
