Side by side

Five roles, one way of sorting them.

The five roles we have posting data for. Posted pay from real US postings, loaded the same way on every role. The last column is why the bill differs: the more duties have a right answer, the more the agents take.

RoleMedian posted payMiddle half of posted payLoaded, a yearTop duties the agents take
Bookkeeper$57,500$48,880 to $67,600$76,8005 of 10 outright, 4 more prepared for a person
Staff accountant$67,500$56,160 to $80,000$90,3003 of 8 outright, 4 more prepared for a person
Accounts payable$57,494$42,640 to $83,200$76,8002 of 7 outright, 4 more prepared for a person
Accounts receivable$57,494$42,640 to $83,200$76,8002 of 6 outright, 4 more prepared for a person
Controller$125,000$100,000 to $157,500$167,1001 of 10 outright, 4 more prepared for a person

AP and AR share one figure: in our read, AP, AR and payroll postings were counted together (17 postings). Loaded = pay plus payroll taxes and benefits (BLS employer-cost data for companies under 50 staff), each line rounded to the nearest $100. Public averages, not a quote.

Which role is your posting?

Read your posting's verbs.

Titles are loose. The duties tell you which role it really is, and we check it with you on the first call.

Reconcile, enter, invoice

Bookkeeper

Of the 125 bookkeeper postings we read, 102 asked for bank reconciliation, 98 for bills and 91 for invoicing. This is the role where the agents take the most.

The bookkeeper role
Close, adjust, support the audit

Staff accountant

21 postings read: 15 asked for the close, 14 for journal entries and 12 for audit support, and 13 required a degree. More judgment, more of the hours with a person.

The staff accountant role
Review, report, plan, lead

Controller

108 postings read: 92 asked for reporting, 76 for budgeting and 61 for leading a team, with 7 years of experience asked at the median. Mostly judgment, so mostly a person.

Questions about the roles

Our role is not listed.

Tell us anyway. Whatever the title, we find your posting and sort it duty by duty the same way and tell you plainly which duties the agents can take and which stay with a person.

Where do the pay figures come from?

From real US job postings we read in full in September 2026: 125 bookkeeper, 21 staff accountant, 17 AP, AR and payroll, and 108 controller postings. The median is the middle posted salary among those that listed pay. Loaded cost adds payroll taxes 10.7% and benefits 23.0%, the federal Bureau of Labor Statistics averages for private companies with 1 to 49 workers (June 2025).

Can one person cover two roles?

Often. We sort your posting first. If the agents take enough of the routine, one person can own AP and AR, or a bookkeeper can cover what a posting called a staff accountant job. We tell you that on the first call.

Do we have to switch software?

No. We work in your QuickBooks or Xero as it is today. Changing systems is never a condition of working with us.

How fast can you start?

Within the month. Week 1 is access and procedures, week 2 is guided work against your current process, week 3 onward is full production. We never promise a start inside a week.
