Chart of accounts

The list of every category the books use, such as rent, revenue or payroll. Every transaction is coded to one of them.

In plain words

The chart of accounts is the list of buckets your books sort money into. It has five groups: assets, liabilities, equity, income and expenses, each split into accounts like Rent, Fuel or Job materials.

A clean chart makes every report readable. A messy one, with three accounts for the same thing, makes reports disagree with each other and hides where the money goes.

Example

Utilities: Gas and ElectricExpense
Utilities: TelephoneExpense
Job Expenses: Job MaterialsCost of jobs
Accrued liabilitiesLiability
