Journal entry

A manual record in the books that moves an amount between accounts, used for adjustments that do not come from a bank line or a bill.

In plain words

Most entries come from a document: a bank line, a bill, an invoice. A journal entry is the one written by hand, for things no document creates: depreciation, an accrual, a correction, moving a cost to the right month.

Every journal entry has debits equal to credits. A good one carries a note saying why it was made, so whoever reads the books next year understands it.

Example

Accrue a September utility bill that arrives in October

Debit Utilities: Gas and Electric$142.87
Credit Accrued liabilities$142.87

Now September's profit includes September's power bill, even though it is paid in October.
