In plain words
For every employee, the employer pays Social Security (6.2%, up to the yearly wage cap) and Medicare (1.45%) on top of wages: 7.65% together. The same 7.65% is also withheld from the employee's own pay.
On top of that come federal unemployment tax (0.6% of the first $7,000 a year, $42 per employee) and state unemployment tax, which varies by state. Then the filings: Form 941 every quarter, state returns, and Form 940, W-2 and W-3 every year.
Example
A $57,500 bookkeeper, employer side
Social Security, 6.2%$3,565
Medicare, 1.45%$834
Federal unemployment$42
State unemployment depends on your state and your history.
